image003

Choosing the correct thread is one of the first decisions to make when buying brass pipe fittings. A fitting can have the correct outside size and still fail at installation if the thread standard, thread gender or sealing method is wrong.

HBFittings' brass fitting range covers NPT, BSP, BSPT, BSPP, Metric, MPT, UNC, UNF, BSW and other customer-specified threads. Its brass pipe fittings include couplings, elbows, bushings, nipples and other threaded configurations.

For procurement, the complete specification should look more like: 1/2" Male NPT × 1/2" Female NPT, CA360 Brass

rather than simply: 1/2" Brass Fitting

The first description tells the manufacturer exactly what needs to be produced.

1. Why Thread Selection Matters

The thread determines how the fitting connects to the mating component and, in many designs, how the joint is sealed.

An incorrect thread can cause:

Poor thread engagement

Leakage

Cross-threading

Damaged fittings

Difficult assembly

Unplanned adapters

Installation delays

HBFittings' own technical material specifically distinguishes NPT, BSPT and BSPP by thread form and sealing method, and warns against treating NPT and BSPT as interchangeable.

This is particularly important for international purchasing because a U.S. specification and a European specification may describe what looks like the same size using completely different thread standards.

2. The Main Thread Types for Brass Pipe Fittings

image010

image012

image014

For brass pipe fittings, the main thread families buyers are likely to encounter are:

Thread

Type

Common use

NPT

Tapered pipe thread

North America, industrial equipment

BSPT

Tapered pipe thread

Europe, Asia, many international markets

BSPP / G

Parallel pipe thread

Plumbing, instrumentation, equipment

Metric M

Common product terminology

UNC

Unified coarse

Machinery / industrial connections

UNF

Unified fine

Machinery / equipment

BSW

British Standard Whitworth

Legacy / specialized equipment

HBFittings lists these thread options across its brass fitting products and accepts special thread requirements for OEM orders.

3. NPT Thread

image016
image019
image021

NPT = National Pipe Taper

The standard is ASME B1.20.1.

NPT has a tapered thread. The male thread becomes larger toward the end, while the female thread has the corresponding taper.

Typical applications:

  • U.S. plumbing
  • Industrial piping
  • Pneumatic equipment
  • Instrumentation
  • Pumps
  • Valves
  • Water systems

HBFittings lists NPT among its standard thread options and specifies NPT fittings for a range of brass pipe and hose products.

Typical specification

1/2" Male NPT

or:

1/2" Female NPT

For purchasing, always state male/female + size + NPT.

4. NPT and NPTF Are Not the Same

image022

image026

image024

NPT and NPTF are easy to confuse.

NPT

Standard tapered pipe thread.

Pressure-tight connections normally use an appropriate thread sealant.

NPTF

Dryseal tapered pipe thread.

The thread geometry is designed to create tighter metal-to-metal interference.

HBFittings' recent technical article explains the distinction and notes that NPT and NPTF should not simply be treated as interchangeable.

If the equipment drawing specifies NPTF, do not replace it with standard NPT without engineering approval.

5. BSPT Thread

image029
image031
image033

BSPT = British Standard Pipe Taper

BSPT is commonly found in:

  • Europe
  • Asia
  • UK-related markets
  • Industrial equipment
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Its thread angle is different from NPT.

HBFittings identifies BSPT as one of the thread options available for its brass pipe fittings.

A typical purchase description:

G1/2?

would not be enough if the intended thread is tapered.

Instead specify:

R1/2 BSPT Male

where the project standard uses that designation.

6. BSPP / G Thread

image035
image037
image039

BSPP = British Standard Pipe Parallel

It is commonly identified by the letter G.

Examples:

  • G1/8
  • G1/4
  • G3/8
  • G1/2
  • G3/4
  • G1

Unlike tapered pipe threads, BSPP threads are parallel.

The thread itself normally does not provide the complete pressure seal. Depending on the fitting design, sealing may use:

  • O-ring
  • Flat washer
  • Bonded seal
  • Gasket
  • Sealing face

HBFittings' technical information specifically points out that G/BSPP threads are parallel and rely on an external sealing element, unlike standard NPT.

8. Metric Threads

image047
image049
image051

Metric threads are identified by:

M + nominal diameter + pitch

Examples:

  • M8 × 1.0
  • M10 × 1.0
  • M12 × 1.5
  • M16 × 1.5
  • M20 × 1.5

Unlike pipe thread descriptions such as G1/2 or 1/2 NPT, metric thread specifications require the pitch.

For example:

M20

is incomplete.

A better specification is:

M20 × 1.5 Male

HBFittings supports metric thread machining and lists metric thread options across its brass fittings.

9. Metric Thread vs G Thread

This is another common purchasing error.

A customer may see: M20 × 1.5

and: G1/2 and assume they are simply two ways to describe a similar connection.

They are not.

10. Male Thread vs Female Thread

image052

image054

image056

Thread standard alone is not enough.

You also need to specify gender.

Male Thread

The threads are on the outside.

Common terms:

  • Male NPT
  • MNPT
  • MPT
  • Male BSPT

Female Thread

The threads are inside.

Common terms:

  • Female NPT
  • FNPT
  • FPT
  • Female BSPT

For example:

1/2" FNPT × 1/2" MNPT

is much clearer than:

1/2" NPT adapter

11. MPT, FPT, MIP and FIP

These abbreviations appear frequently in North American brass fitting catalogs.

Term

Meaning

MPT

Male Pipe Thread

FPT

Female Pipe Thread

MIP

Male Iron Pipe

FIP

Female Iron Pipe

In practice, these terms can appear in product descriptions alongside NPT.

For example, HBFittings lists its Brass Pipe Hex Bushing as MIP × FIP, while its product specifications also identify NPT among the supported thread types.

For an international RFQ, it is better to write the formal standard:

1/2" Male NPT

rather than relying only on:

1/2" MPT

12. How to Select Thread Size

image058

image060

image062

Do not measure only the outside diameter and assume the thread size.

Pipe-thread nominal sizes do not directly correspond to the measured outside diameter.

For example, a 1/2" NPT male thread has an outside diameter that is larger than 1/2 inch.

When checking an unknown fitting, identify:

  1. Outside diameter
  2. Thread pitch
  3. Thread angle
  4. Taper or parallel form
  5. Male/female configuration
  6. Existing equipment standard

For production orders, the manufacturer's drawing or the customer's equipment specification should be the primary reference.

13. How to Select Thread by Market

image064
image065
image067

A rough starting point:

North America

Common:

  • NPT
  • NPTF
  • SAE-related threads in certain applications

Europe

Common:

  • BSPP
  • BSPT
  • Metric

UK

Common:

  • BSPP
  • BSPT
  • Metric

Asia

Depends heavily on industry and destination market:

  • BSP
  • NPT
  • Metric
  • Custom equipment threads

HBFittings serves international markets and lists multiple thread systems rather than limiting production to one regional standard.

Market location is only a starting point. The equipment drawing always takes priority.

14. Thread Selection by Application

Residential Plumbing

image069
image071
image073

Typical requirements:

  • NPT in North American systems
  • BSPP/BSPT in many other markets
  • Lead-free brass where potable-water regulations require it

Common fittings:

  • Elbow
  • Tee
  • Coupling
  • Bushing
  • Adapter
  • Nipple

HBFittings lists its brass pipe fittings for water and other fluid applications, with multiple thread standards available.

HVAC

image074
image076
image078

Confirm:

  • Equipment port thread
  • Water circuit specification
  • Pressure
  • Temperature
  • Sealing method

A U.S.-manufactured HVAC component may use NPT while imported equipment may use BSP or metric.

Instrumentation

image079

image081
image082

Instrumentation frequently combines different standards.

For example:

M20 × 1.5 × G1/2

or:

1/4" NPT × 1/4" BSPT

HBFittings' pressure-gauge adapter range includes these kinds of mixed-standard connections.

This is an important use case for brass adapters.

15. Thread Selection for Pressure Systems

image083
image086

The thread standard is only one part of pressure performance.

Also confirm:

  • Brass grade
  • Wall thickness
  • Thread engagement
  • Sealing method
  • Fitting design
  • Working pressure
  • Temperature

HBFittings' product specifications vary considerably by fitting type. For example, one brass female-thread hex coupling lists working pressure up to 1000 psi, while other brass fittings on the site have different ratings.

Therefore:

Do not apply one pressure rating to every brass fitting simply because the thread size is the same.

16. Thread Sealing: NPT

image088

image090

image092

Standard NPT is a tapered pipe thread, but the thread surfaces alone should not automatically be assumed to provide a leak-free pressure seal.

Depending on the application and applicable standard, sealing may use:

  • PTFE tape
  • Pipe-thread sealant
  • Anaerobic sealant
  • Other approved sealing compounds

HBFittings' current technical article states that standard NPT pressure connections normally require an appropriate thread sealant and explains common causes of NPT leakage, including thread mismatch and improper installation.

17. Thread Sealing: BSPP

image095
image097
image099

BSPP/G is a parallel thread.

The thread itself does not provide the same taper-based sealing principle as NPT.

Depending on the fitting, sealing may be achieved with:

  • O-ring
  • Flat washer
  • Bonded washer
  • Gasket
  • Machined sealing face

HBFittings' technical guidance specifically distinguishes BSPP from NPT on this point.

When purchasing G-thread fittings, ask:

Where is the sealing surface?

That question can prevent many installation problems.

18. BSPT Sealing

BSPT is tapered, so the sealing principle is closer to NPT than BSPP.

However, BSPT and NPT are not interchangeable.

They differ in:

  • Thread angle
  • Thread geometry
  • Standard
  • Mating characteristics

HBFittings gives the thread-angle distinction as:

  • NPT: 60°
  • BSPT: 55°
  • BSPP: 55°

19. Brass Pipe Fitting Thread Selection by Product Type

image100
image103

image101

Brass Elbow

Specify:

Angle

Male/female

Thread standard

Size

Example:

1/2" Female NPT × 1/2" Female NPT, 90° Elbow

HBFittings lists 90° female elbows with NPT, BSP/BSPT and other customer-specified thread options.

Brass Coupling

Specify:

Female/female

Size

Thread standard

HBFittings' female hex coupling connects two male pipes of the same size in a straight run.

Brass Bushing

Specify:

Male/female

Large-side thread

Small-side thread

HBFittings' brass hex bushing is designed for connecting pipes of different diameters and can be produced with NPT, BSP, metric and other threads.

Brass Nipple

Specify:

  • Male thread
  • Size
  • Length
  • Thread standard

HBFittings offers brass long nipples in NPT, BSP and BSPP configurations.

20. Thread Selection for Hose Barb Adapters

image105
image107
image109

For hose barb fittings, there are two dimensions to identify:

Hose Side

Specify:

1/2" Hose ID

Thread Side

Specify:

1/2" Female NPT

HBFittings' hose-barb products show combinations such as hose sizes from 1/8" through 1/2" paired with NPT sizes, and the manufacturer states that BSP, Metric, NPT, MPT, UNC, BSW, UNF and special threads can be supplied according to customer requirements.

21. Thread Selection for Push-Fit Adapters

image111
image113
image115

A push-fit adapter has two separate specifications:

Pipe side

1/2" OD PEX

Thread side

1/2" MPT / NPT

HBFittings' brass push-fit range includes Push Fit × MPT Adapter and Push Fit × MPT Elbow, so the thread specification is an integral part of the product selection.

22. How to Read a Brass Fitting Specification

Suppose the drawing says:

1/2 FNPT × 1/2 MNPT

Read it as:

1/2" = nominal pipe thread size

FNPT = female NPT

× = connection on the other side

MNPT = male NPT

Another example:

M20 × 1.5 × G1/2

means:

Metric M20 thread

1.5 mm pitch

Transition to G1/2 BSPP

HBFittings' pressure-gauge adapter products use exactly this kind of mixed-thread specification.

23. Thread Selection Checklist

Before placing an order, confirm all of the following.

24. Common Thread Selection Mistakes

Mistake 1 - NPT and BSPT Treated as the Same

They are not.

The thread angles differ.

Mistake 2 - BSPP Used Without a Sealing Element

G/BSPP is a parallel thread. The sealing arrangement needs to be specified.

Mistake 3 - "1/2 Inch" Without a Standard

The same nominal size can exist in different thread systems.

Mistake 4 - Metric Pitch Missing

"M20" is incomplete.

Use:

M20 × 1.5

Mistake 5 - Male/Female Not Stated

A 1/2" NPT fitting could be male or female.

Mistake 6 - Choosing by Country Alone

"USA = NPT" and "Europe = BSP" is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking the actual equipment port.

Mistake 7 - Ignoring Sealing Method

The thread and the sealing method should be considered together.

25. OEM Brass Pipe Fittings Thread Requirements

image116
image118

image120

For OEM projects, HBFittings supports special thread requirements, including BSP, Metric, NPT, MPT, UNC, BSW, UNF and other customer-specified threads.

The drawing should include:

  • Thread standard
  • Thread size
  • Thread pitch where applicable
  • Male/female
  • Thread length
  • Major/minor dimensions
  • Tolerance
  • Sealing face
  • Overall length
  • Hex dimensions

For example:

C37700 Brass 90° Elbow - 1/2" FNPT × 1/2" FNPT - ASME B1.20.1 - Natural Brass - 1000 pcs

HBFittings' brass elbow information also shows how a product specification can combine material, thread type, finish, pressure, temperature and media requirements.

26. Brass Grade and Thread Machining

Thread selection and material selection should not be completely separated.

HBFittings lists:

  • CW614N / CA360 for bar-stock fittings
  • CA377 for forged fittings
  • Other brass grades including DZR and lead-free materials depending on the application.

For precision threaded fittings, machining quality affects:

  • Thread profile
  • Pitch accuracy
  • Surface finish
  • Mating consistency
  • Leakage performance

For high-volume OEM orders, ask the supplier how the thread is inspected rather than relying only on visual inspection.

27. Thread Inspection

image122

image124

Useful inspection methods include:

Go / No-Go Gauges

Used for production thread verification.

Thread Plug Gauge

For female threads.

Thread Ring Gauge

For male threads.

Dimensional Measurement

Used for:

  • Diameter
  • Length
  • Pitch
  • Hex dimensions

HBFittings highlights CNC machining and precision thread production in its brass fitting manufacturing information. Its newer bulkhead fitting documentation, for example, specifies controlled thread pitch accuracy and CNC multi-axis machining.
