Most of time ,Suppliers get inquiry from customers ,When suppliers quote 316, it feels too expensive; when they offer 304, you worry it won't hold up in your working conditions and will cause problems later. The price difference isn't just "random markup"-it's a real gap in composition, corrosion resistance, and application scenarios.here are my some analysis to help you avoid wasting money and post-sales troubles

 

 

I. The Essence: A Small Difference in Composition, a Big Gap in Performance

Both 304 and 316 are austenitic stainless steels with similar basic structures, but the addition of molybdenum (Mo) in 316 directly determines its corrosion resistance level. The core differences in composition and basic performance are shown in the table below:

1. Don't Blindly Choose 316, and Don't Force 304 to Save Money

Regular clean gas/water: Choose 304-it's the most cost-effective and fully sufficient.

If it involves salt, chlorine, seawater, or chemical corrosion: Choose 316 directly-304 can be used short-term, but it will definitely corrode and leak in 1~3 years. The later replacement and downtime costs are far higher than the price difference.

2. Check for "Authentic Material" and Don't Be Fooled by Low Prices

Regular Manufacturers: Will provide material certificates (EN 10204 3.1) and spectral reports to ensure 304/316 composition meets standards.

Low-Price Traps: There are "fake 316" (insufficient molybdenum content) and "passing 304 off as 316" on the market. They look cheap but break quickly in corrosive scenarios.

3. The Quality of the Ferrule Fitting Itself Is More Important Than the Material

No matter how good the material is, if the ferrule cutting edge, thread precision, and processing tolerance are poor, it will still leak:

Ferrule: The cutting edge should be sharp, uniform, and free of cracks, so it can effectively bite the steel pipe during installation.

Tolerance: The inner diameter of the fitting and the ferrule size tolerance should be strictly controlled (within ±0.05mm) for stable sealing.

Installation: Tighten according to the standard torque-don't over-tighten. 316 is slightly harder and prone to cracking if over-tightened; 304 is prone to deformation if over-tightened.
