What is the ASTM A234 WPB

Jan 08, 2024

ASTM A234 standard steel pipe fittings are widely used in pipeline systems, including carbon steel pipe fittings and alloy steel pipe fittings.

What is steel pipe fittings

Steel pipe fittings are made of carbon steel pipes or alloy steel pipes, steel plates, and profiles, and their shape can play a role in the pipeline system (changing the direction or rate of fluid). These accessories mainly include steel elbows (45 degree or 90 degree elbows), tees, reducers (concentric or eccentric reducers), tees, pipe caps, short joints, flanges, gaskets, bolts, etc.

For industrial purposes, it is usually necessary to change the conveying direction in pipeline systems; Adjust the flow rate of fluids (oil and gas, water, mud); Open or close pipelines, etc. To complete these activities, steel pipe fittings will be used.

What is ASTM A234 WPB

ASTM A234 is a standard specification for steel pipe fittings, including data for carbon steel and alloy steel in medium to high temperature environments. It includes seamless and welded types of steel fittings. Steel pipe fittings are used in the manufacturing of pressure pipelines and pressure vessels. These accessory data include killed steel, forgings, bars, plates, seamless or HFW (fusion welded) pipe products, with the addition of filler metal.

ASTM A234 includes the latest versions of ASTM B16.9, B16.11, MSS-SP-79, MSS-SP-83, MSS-SP-95, and MSS-SP-97 for seamless and welded structural forged carbon steel and alloy steel fittings.

As we know, ASTM A234 steel pipe fittings are used in the manufacturing of pressure pipelines and pressure vessels, for medium to high temperature environments. The pipe fitting data in this standard includes killed steel, forgings, bars, plates, seamless or fusion welded pipes, with the addition of filler metal.

This standard specifies the specifications for elbows, tees, reducers, end caps, and tees, typically using butt welded ends.

ASTM A234 grade

The ASTM A234 specification has many levels, such as WPB, WPC, WP5, WP9, WP11, WP12, WP22, WP91, and so on.

Among these standard grades, WPB is the most commonly used data for medium to high temperature pipelines. W is weldable, P is pressure, B is grade B, and is the minimum yield strength.

The raw material for ASTM A234 WPB steel pipe fittings can be steel pipes, such as ASTM A106 grade B and grade C. It can also be steel plate, such as ASTM A285 Grade C, ASTM A516 Gr 70, ASTM A572, etc.

Chemical and mechanical properties of ASTM A234 WPB steel pipe fittings

WPB grade fittings made of steel pipes or steel plates have a maximum C of 0.35%.

The maximum carbon content of forged parts is 0.35%, the maximum silicon content is 0.35%, and there is no minimum value.

For every 0.01 decrease in carbon content, the maximum manganese content increases by 0.06%, reaching a maximum of 1.35% of manganese.

The total content of copper, nickel, niobium, and molybdenum shall not exceed 1.00%.

Niobium+molybdenum shall not exceed 0.32%
